Cynthia Haq is Professor of Family Medicine and Population Health Sciences, and Director of the Center for Global Health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH). She received her M.D. at Indiana University, completed her residency training at the UW-Madison, and joined the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School before returning to Wisconsin.

Early in her career she served as the medical director for a rural health center in Kasangati, Uganda, where she learned the importance of community based primary health care. Subsequently she served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Aga Khan University in Karachi, where she helped establish the first family medicine post-graduate training program in Pakistan, and at Makerere University where she assisted development of family medicine in Uganda.

At the UWSMPH, Dr. Haq served as the Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Family Medicine from 1995-2003. She helped develop the state-wide, community based Primary Care: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatric Clerkship and has led federally sponsored training grants to develop curricula to teach medical students advanced communication, evidence based medicine, community and population health, and leadership skills. In 1992 she helped students establish the South Side MEDIC clinic to serve the poor and uninsured in Madison.

Internationally Dr. Haq served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and Wonca, the World Organization of Family Doctors, to co-author the book, Improving Health Systems: the Contribution of Family Medicine, published in 2002. This book is being used to help nations and medical schools to strengthen their medical education and health systems based on a strong foundation of community based primary health care. Dr. Haq helped establish a network of schools for Afghan refugee women and children in Pakistan, and a program to reduce maternal mortality in Afghanistan. She directed an International Health Fellowship Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense involving universities in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the US. Dr. Haq has served as a consultant to medical schools and governments in the United States, Central America, Africa and Asia.

Dr. Haq is the author of numerous educational research papers, and the recipient of the University of Wisconsin Medical School Dean's Teaching Award, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine National Excellence in Education Award, the American Association of Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award, and the American Academy of Family Physicians Presidential Award.

Dr. Haq is now leading the UW Center for Global Health to further develop international health curricula, research and partnerships.

Dr. Haq practices the full scope family medicine in Belleville and Madison. She greatly enjoys teaching and collaborating with colleagues in Wisconsin and throughout the world. She is a proud mother of four beautiful children.
