Fellowship

This fellowship will help fund a proposal designed by the applicant--a
U.S. undergraduate or graduate student between the ages of
18-25--to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to
the mandate of UNESCO – using
education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture,
and/or communication and information to build strong ties among
nations. Applicants will conduct
their work from the period between September 2008 and December
2008.

August 5, 5 p.m. EST -- Deadline for proposals to be
received
Week of August 19 --Subcommittee meeting to produce initial
top candidates and conduct phone interviews, as needed

to determine recommendations of final top candidate and alternates

Foreign Language and Area
Studies (FLAS)

FLAS fellowships are designed to support graduate
students who are studying South Asian languages and area studies
courses. Languages offered during the academic year: Hindi,
Persian (in relation to Pakistan and/or Afghanistan), Telugu,
Tibetan (modern spoken), and Urdu. Languages offered during
the summer: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi,
Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, Urdu.
A FLAS Fellowship recipient
is required to:
1) enroll in a course of modern
language study consistent with his/her application, and
2) to enroll in a non-language
course (“area studies course”) with significant
South Asia content for both the Fall and Spring Semesters.
The FLAS Coordinator will make initial determinations on
the appropriateness of area studies courses. If necessary,
further determinations on the appropriateness of area studies
courses will be made by the FLAS Selection Committee.
Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS)

The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS) is
part of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global
Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" at the University
of Heidelberg.
The objective of the Cluster is to examine processes of cultural
exchange with a strong focus on interdisciplinary research.
The Cluster challenges the master narrative of asymmetrical
Western domination along with its historical explanation, its
methodology and the resulting structures of humanities and
social science research. For the winter term 2008/2009 the
GPTS offers 3 short-term (3 month) scholarships for Asian PhD/Doctoral
students
The GPTS is looking for applicants with an excellent academic background. Selected
students will take part in the regular programme of the GPTS and contribute actively
to it. The scholarships are awarded for 3 months. Scholarship holders are expected
to be in Heidelberg between October 2008 and February 2009. The short-term scholarship
includes travel expenses to Heidelberg and back home, and a monthly stipend of
1000- ?. Currently contributors to the Cluster work in the fields of Anthropology,
Archeology, Art History (European and East Asian), South and East Asian Studies,
Assyriology, Cultural Studies, English Philology, Ethnology, Geography, History,
Indology, Islamic Studies, Musicology, Philosophy, Political Science, Public
Health, Religious Studies, Sinology, Sociology and others. Reflecting the interdisciplinary
approach of the Cluster, the GSTS invites Asian doctoral students from these
as well as other disciplines from the humanities and social sciences to apply.
Candidates submit their applications including a letter of intention (400 words
maximum), a CV, and a project proposal (1000 words) related to the major themes
and topics of the Cluster ( http://www.vjc.uni-hd.de/)
to the online application system. Electronic submission of the application is
mandatory.
