Khorana Program for Scientific Exchange

The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) has recently launched the Khorana Program for Scientific Exchange. Dr. Har Gobind Khorana, who won the Nobel Prize in 1968 for his work at the interface of chemistry and biology while a member of the UW faculty, has generously agreed to lend his name to this program. This exchange program will foster and expand interaction between the Indian and U.S. scientific communities and prove to be transformative for both American and Indian students. This is indeed a fitting way to honor this great scientist on the 40th anniversary of his award.

The Khorana program is starting with the exchange of students and scholars between select Indian institutions and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Khorana program also envisions applied research that benefits rural/agricultural development in India.

A third leg of the program would place students and scholars in internships with appropriate industries both in the US and in India.

Sixteen Khorana Fellows from India arrived on campus during summer 2008 for research internships in laboratories in CALS, L&S, Engineering, and Medicine. Khorana Fellows from UW are expected to go to India the summer of 2009.
